Canadian Online Primer Courses

Designed for the Canadian Insurance Industry

Under the stewardship of the group insurance industry, the CEBS program has developed two 25 hour online Primer courses. Participants will have 180 days to complete each course. Funded by industry, the Group Benefits and Group Retirement Plans Primers offer practical, time-efficient and cost effective educational tools for introducing individuals without prior or only minimal knowledge and experience to the basics of the group life and health or group retirement business.

For those interested in continuing their professional development, the Primers also provide a stepping stone to the Group Benefits Associate (GBA) and Retirement Plans Associate (RPA) designations that are part of the Proficiency Standards established by the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). These Standards require that employees who represent the insurer in the sale and service of group life and health insurance and group retirement contracts earn the GBA designation or the RPA designation through the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Program. CEBS is co-sponsored by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and Dalhousie University.

The Primer Courses, including the testing component, have been developed by Dalhousie University, the academic entity of the CEBS program responsible for curriculum and examination standards for all the Canadian CEBS courses, in partnership with industry experts. Course administration including implementation, registration and recordkeeping is the responsibility of the CEBS Program/International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

We recommend using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher when taking any of our online classes. If you use an alternative browser, you may have trouble viewing the course as it is designed.

Other Courses

The following e-learning courses are designed as an alternative to the industry-specific Primer Courses

About The Introduction Courses

The content for these online courses is taken from the Canadian Group Life and Health Online Primer Course and the Canadian Group Retirement Plans Online Primer Course developed by Dalhousie University under the stewardship of the group insurance industry, specifically for those selling group insurance and group retirement products and services. Unlike the Primer courses, the Introduction to Group Benefits in Canada does not include those modules addressing the specifics on the Life Cycle of Group Benefit Plans covering prospecting, quoting/proposing/selling, implementing and servicing to termination; the Introduction to Group Retirement Plans in Canada does not include those modules addressing the specifics on the Life Cycle of a Capital Accumulation Plan Account covering prospecting, quoting/proposing/selling, implementing and service to termination from the insurer’s perspective. If you work for a member company of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), and you need to meet the proficiency standards, you should view the information on the Canadian Group Life and Health Online Primer and the Canadian Group Retirement Primer on the CEBS Web site: www.cebs.org.

We would like to acknowledge the CLHIA and the Member Companies of CLHIA for their financial support, sharing their vision and expertise and working with Dalhousie University to develop the course content and tests.
