Quick Retirement Plan Overview

Learn about Canada’s CAP Maze

Since the mid 1960s, there has been some sort of private retirement plan legislation in Canada – federal, provincial or territorial. While there may be differences between each governments’ particular legislation, one aspect was consistent – all of the legislation was focused on Defined Benefit Pension Plans.

Recently, "best practices and guidelines” were developed specifically for Defined Contribution retirement programs, known as the "Capital Accumulation Plan (CAP) Guidelines.”

It is with the CAP guidelines in mind that three e-learning courses, called the "CAP Maze" have been developed. These courses are adapted from the Introduction to Group Retirement Plans in Canada courses.

You can enter this maze through any one of three entry points:

  1. Defined Contribution Pension Plans (DCPPs)
  2. Group Registered Retirement Savings Plans (Group RRSPs)
  3. Deferred Profit Sharing Plans (DPSPs)

Courses look at basic plan design characteristics, considerations in the accumulation and distribution stages and advantages for employers and employees. These courses can be studied as a complete series or as stand-alone courses depending on your needs.

Each course is about an hour in length.
