Victoria Conference Centre, Victoria, BC

Last time offered.

Held in conjunction with the Canadian Legal and Legislative Update.

Brief Course Description

ATMS Part I thoroughly addresses the fiduciary role of trustees and the objectives of the trust. Instructors provide detailed analyses of the legal frameworks in which Canadian pension and health and welfare funds operate, and offer practical guidance for responding to the latest regulatory developments. Topics will include:

  • Legal and Legislative Overview
  • Governance (Management of Plans)
  • Selecting and Managing Your Plan Service Providers
  • The Current Law of Fiduciaries
  • Case Studies
(On day two, attendees will be divided into small work groups to participate in case studies. The case study will be distributed on the first day of class and should be read that evening in preparation for the next day’s discussion. Please plan your schedule accordingly.)

Attendance required. To earn credit toward the ATMS certificate, you must be present for the entire program, including all case study group work. Please make your travel plans accordingly.

Prerequisites

  • Before beginning an ATMS course, you must have served three or more years as a trustee in a senior-level, policy-setting role (waived for public sector trustees).
  • Previous attendance at an educational program for new trustees such as any of the Foundation for Trustees or the new FTMS courses is strongly recommended.
  • While it is permissible to take either of the ATMS Part II courses before ATMS Part I, it is important to note that ATMS Part I is designed to lay the foundation for ATMS course work. In order to maximize your learning experience, it is highly recommended that ATMS Part I be taken before ATMS Part II.

Additional Information

Part I applies to the Certificate in Pension Fund Management and the Certificate in Group Benefits Management . If you are planning to complete both of these certificates, you do not need to take Part I twice.
