Part IV addresses governance through leadership, focusing on developing the leadership capacity of individual trustees and
the board collectively. This course examines leadership competencies and the role of the board of trustees as orchestrators
of change.

The course considers two key elements of leadership: communications and ethics. Expert practitioners focus on converting legal obligations into communication opportunities and making the distinction between a communications policy and a communications strategy. Real-life case studies are presented that pose ethical challenges and test the limits of effective leadership.

  • Ethical challenges (representative samples)
    • Spending trust assets—potential pitfalls and strategies*
    • A fresh look at your relationships with service providers*
    • Making appropriate and valid investment decisions*
    • Conflicts of interest—a fresh look at process*

Meeting the Challenge of Leading Change:
A Self-Assessment of Leadership Capability

  • Major changes that demand leadership
  • Personal, team and strategic leadership
  • Assessment of specific leadership competencies

Boards as Orchestrators of Change:
Meeting the Challenge

  • When to “take the lead”

   Typically four or five challenges are presented for review and discussion. Topics  
   are subject to change.

ATMS is designed for experienced trustees and others who have mastered the basic principles and practices of trusteeship and who wish to advance to the next level.

Additionally, consultants, administrators and other professionals working for boards of trustees have benefited from participation in the ATMS program.

Additional Course Notes

Prerequisite

The ATMS Certificate in Group Benefits Management or Pension Fund Management must be completed before taking Part IV.

It is permissible to take Part IV before Part III Pensions.
