Larry S. Chapman, M.P.H.

Mr. Chapman is chairman and senior consultant of Summex Corporation headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana which specializes in providing a full range of integrated health management services to employers, trusts and managed care organizations. He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on health management. His current areas of emphasis include population health management and integrated prevention. Larry sees Consumer-Driven Health Plans, population health management, health and productivity management and the use of benefit linked incentives for wellness as being the hot topics on most companies' radar screens.

Previously, Larry was president of his own firm for sixteen years. He also served as a senior staff member of the U.S. Public Health Service for the Region X office of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Larry grew up in southern California and was self-described "surf bum" spending his summers surfing. He enjoys backpacking, gardening, World War II history, rafting, mountain biking, and golf. He resides in Seattle with his wife of thirty-two years. They have two grown sons and one new granddaughter.

An accomplished author, Larry has written thirteen books and published over 170 professional articles on employee wellness, demand management and health cost management.

Larry received his bachelor of science degree in environmental health from the University of California at Los Angeles; his medical technology training from St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica; and his master of public health degree in medical care organization and health services administration from the University of Michigan. Larry teaches Health Care Cost Management in the Certificate Series. He believes the best teaching involves the active engagement of the learner and accordingly, uses the approach of "Show-Discuss-Apply" in his teaching. "I enjoy the use of case studies, learning games and a very practical approach to education. My teaching tends to be oriented toward problem solving and finding workable solutions to commonly perceived problems."
