International Foundation seeks approval of seminars from state insurance departments based on requests for continuing education on the registration forms. Approval of all seminars is not automatically sought in all states.
Advance Requests for Approval
Some states require receipt of an approval request 60 days in advance of the program. It is important that insurance producers requesting continuing education credit register far enough in advance of the program so that this requirement for advance approval can be met.
Multilicensed Producers—When Resident State Requires CE
If the producer 's resident state of licensing requires continuing education, the other states of licensing will accept the credit earned in the resident state. Therefore, multilicensed agents should request that the International Foundation seek approval of the program only in their resident state.
Program Review Fees
Some states require the International Foundation to pay a nonrefundable fee for reviewing each program. If the producer has fulfilled his or her requirements (and any acceptable rollovers) for the current reporting period, it would be appreciated that credit not be requested when in fact it is not needed.
Partial Credit Cannot Be Issued by the International Foundation
When a program is approved, most states require that the entire program be attended before credit can be granted. (Example: If a program is approved for 12 credit hours and the agent attends ten hours, the sponsor is not permitted to issue credit for ten hours.)
Many states require that the International Foundation report credit earned to the insurance department. Many of these states require the producer's Social Security number, state license number and the due date (license renewal date) for reporting credit. Producers should provide this information at time of registration so that the Foundation has this information when reporting credit.
