PC01—Redefining Humanly Possible - Finding balance, productivity and health
Today, the speed of life and work can be dizzying. Tomorrow, well, you know it’s only going to get faster. The good news, however, is that what you yearn for—more balance in your life—is actually the solution to your more with less dilemma. In this program you will learn how to incorporate more balance, health, connection and motivation into your daily life. Here’s what else you will learn:

  • How to outpace life’s demands by maximizing your energy level
  • Understand and overcome the barriers sabotaging your motivation
  • The system used by U.S. olympic sport psychologists to create the world’s hardest and most motivated “workers”
  • To eat the diet of energy, and ensure lasting, powerful mental and physical energy and health
  • How to maximize deep sleep so that you can still be “on your game” with limited sleep time.

PC03—Create an Edge: Reaching Innovative Solutions
Current economic conditions require innovative solutions to current problems. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will keep getting the same results. The same results don’t work anymore! We need to think differently about how we do business and process information. Most of us are taught to be logical, analytic thinkers who use rational problem solving when confronted with a workplace problem. If you are using ONLY rational problem solving, you are missing the second right answer. This thought-provoking preconference workshop will inspire you to challenge the way you think, help you get rid of your mental locks and search for the next right answer.

  • The difference between right-brain and left-brain thinking
  • How to stimulate the “creative” side of your brain
  • The classic innovation traps
  • Using creative techniques to solve real problems

PC05—Are You a Good Leader? A Time-Tested Framework for First-Class Leadership From BusinessWeek.com’s Ethics Guy
To get ahead today, you have to put ethics aside, right? Actually, you’re more likely to prosper, even in these uncertain times, when you put ethics front and center in all that you do. This interactive session shows why taking the low road isn’t just the wrong thing to do, but it’s also bad for business—and bad for you. This workshop shows how to apply the traditional principles of ethics at work and beyond by using specific examples. It will also include engaging stories, and uses clips from movies and TV shows. Not a boring ethics talk but a motivational, “get-on board” engagement, where you will learn

  • The five fundamental principles of ethics that have stood the test of time
  • How to apply these principles in every relationship you have
  • What Andy Griffith can teach you about punishing people the right way
  • Where you should NEVER do the right thing
  • What it takes to get a good night’s sleep every night
  • Bonus: You’ll discover the ONE THING you must do TODAY if you want to feel better about yourself.

Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D.

PC07—Collective Wisdom: The Path to Better Group Decision Making
Many times trustees encounter dilemmas when faced with making decisions both as individuals and as a group. Because most trustees are participants in the plan as well as guardians of that same plan, they often find themselves as both the decision makers as well as those who are affected by the decisions made. This workshop will examine the conflicts inherent in group decision making because of differing roles (participants and trustees) and constituencies (management and labor). We will explore different decision-making models. The selection of appropriate decision-making methods and the wise use of consensus will help trustees select the right tools for the task at hand. Walking the ethical path among all the options is the goal.

  • Why decision making is hard
  • What choices you have in making choices
  • How to select the best decision-making model for the problem
  • How to resolve the built-in conflict in your roles as individual and trustee, management and labor
  • How the use of standards can assist in decision making
  • Why consensus is harder than it looks
  • How to examine the relationship between the decision model and the level of compliance needed for the decision
  • When and how to use interest-based problem solving for decisions

PC02—Becoming a Health Promotion Champion—What it takes to effectively pitch, implement and sustain a successful wellness program
Regardless of what the future holds for health care, wellness programs are and will continue to be critical to sustaining health care benefits for your members. The big question is not “Should I implement a wellness program?” but rather:

  • What does it take to effectively and persuasively pitch wellness to your stakeholders?
  • After you get the “yes,” how do you set up your program so that you maximize participation and return on investment?
  • Then, after the “honeymoon” period is over, what you must do to ensure your program continues to grow in order to not experience the steady decline in participation that many other wellness programs do.

This is a “dig in and get your hands dirty” workshop.

Andy Core, M.S.

PC04—Leading Others Through Turbulent Times
It’s easy to be a good leader when things are calm, employees are competent, participants are polite and the economy is thriving. Unfortunately, that’s not where we are right now. It seems as if every day we read about another company that is declaring bankruptcy, or reducing their workforce or their employee benefits. Customers are hoarding their money and leaders are trying to figure out what strategy to implement next to generate revenue. Truly great leaders emerge when situationsnbecome chaotic, employees are frustrated and/or demoralized, and confusion is the norm. There are a few things that great leaders do that are fairly consistent. During this timely preconference workshop, you will learn a variety of strategies for leading others through turbulent times as quickly as possible.

  • Developing a powerful, positive communication strategy
  • How to remain hopeful when bad news is everywhere
  • Crisis communication do’s and don’ts
  • How to move different people in the same direction
  • Learning from mistakes
  • Making tough decisions
  • Identifying and getting rid of obstacles

Regina M. Clark, CSP

PC06—Ethical Intelligence: How Good People Make Great Things Happen
The biggest misunderstanding about ethics is that its purpose is to turn crooks and con artists into decent human beings. What ethics is really about is helping good people make the right decisions. Yes, you are already a good person. But it’s also true that you can become a better one. This lively, interactive presentation shows how to strengthen your work and personal relationships, make better decisions at work and home, promote positive word-of-mouth about your work, and ultimately feel better about yourself—all by applying five simple principles you already know. By the end of this session, you will

  • Know what to do to increase your ethics IQ
  • Reacquaint yourself with a few basic principles for doing the right thing
  • Discover why, in the long run, doing what you WANT to do is the same thing as doing what you OUGHT to do
  • Bonus: You’ll leave with a renewed commitment for being a person of conscience and how you can stay true to yourself, even when others are pressuring you to take the low road. If you are dishonest, lack integrity or enjoy taking advantage of other people, this session isn’t for you. But, if you care deeply about doing the right thing and want to do a better job of making the right choices, you’ve come to the right place.

Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D.

PC08—When Hard Bargainers Collide: Taking Positive Steps for Improving Your Negotiation Outcomes
Most people think of themselves as good, tough bargainers. They like to think they got a good deal, did a good job, and didn’t get ”pushed around” at the bargaining table. But, can you be an even better negotiator? We will look at the two key types of bargaining and will explore what to do when the hard bargainer runs into a collaborative style. We will look at the tactics and techniques of highly skilled negotiators in the face of seeming insurmountable opposition from the other parties at the table. This session will candidly and openly discuss how to have the difficult conversations that might occur in negotiations during extremely hard economic times.

  • Distributive and integrative bargaining
  • Outlining explicit interests
  • The value of multiple packages
  • The ladder of inference in negotiation
  • The roles of inquiry and advocacy
  • Dealing with emotional truths
  • Handling difficult conversations
  • How to “cost” a labor agreement
