Budget-Conscious Planning

There are many ways to stretch your budget as you plan your conference trip. Below are just a few ideas.

Hotel

Your hotel stay can often be the biggest part of your education travel expense. The International Foundation has negotiated low hotel rates at a range of properties so you won’t have to “lose sleep” over your hotel bill. In fact, your hotel stay in Hawaii does not need to be any more than it would be in a continental-U.S. city. Be sure to book your room at the same time you register for the conference—you must reserve your room through the International Foundation to receive its rate. Choose a room sans the view to keep your costs even lower.

Airfare

A little effort goes a long way in keeping your air travel costs low.

  • Plan ahead—Make your reservations early. Airlines often offer lower prices on advance purchase or fare sales several months out.
  • Consider group sales—If multiple individuals are traveling to the conference, check into group travel deals. Most airlines offer this option and can provide Internet access to allow individuals to make reservations independently.
  • Shop online—Do some comparison shopping on various travel and airline Web sites.
  • Enlist the help of a professional—Use a travel agent to help find the best deal.
  • Be flexible—Lower airfares may be available.

Dining

Honolulu may be known as a gold mine of fine-dining options; but, with a little thought and planning, you can stretch your per diem.

  • Be sure to stop in the exhibit hall for lunch on Monday and Tuesday during the conference—it’s free for all registered attendees.
  • Eat like a local. Explore local cuisine in the Honolulu area. These options can offer a more economical meal, and a more adventurous and memorable experience.
  • Plan ahead by checking out area restaurants online before you leave.
