CMS Provides Access to Medicare Data for Performance Measurement

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the release of a final rule regarding the release and use of standardized extracts of Medicare claims data for qualified entities to measure the performance of service providers. The rule provides information on how to qualify to receive claims data extracts and the criteria to follow.

The final rule differs from the proposed rule in that, data is less costly, organizations are given more flexibility in data usage, and the time period for providers to review and appeal performance reports has been extended. The rule also provides strict privacy and security requirements as well as stringent penalties for misuse of Medicare data.

The regulations are effective January 6, 2012.
