Statistics Canada Reports on Status of Pension Plans as of January 1, 2007
Statistics Canada released data on
pension plans
in Canada as of January 1, 2007. In 2006, participation in registered pension plans (RPP) increased by 77,700 members or 1.4 percent. This growth was primarily due to increased participation by women. Almost 80 percent of the members participate in defined benefit plans. Participation in combination plans, containing both defined benefit and defined contribution plans, increased by 88,000 members. Underfunding of defined benefit plans may account for the increase in combination plan participation.
