Type of Examination Questions
Each CEBS exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions. Three basic types of questions are used:
(1) the straight answer type, (2) the multiple option type and (3) the "all EXCEPT" type. A reasonable balance in the number of each type of question used in the examinations is maintained. An example of each type of question is show below.
1. Straight answer type:
Which of the following statements best describes social security?
A. It is the abstract notion of making society secure in a law and order sense.
B. It is the provision of an equitable level of benefits for all citizens.
C. It is a label that is commonly identified with government programs that provide economic security for people.
D. It is a label that is commonly identified with government attempts to provide economic security for people.
E. It is a method of making people's lives secure through government-sponsored benefit programs.
For this type of question, you must select the one option that best answers the question. In this example, you would select Option C and fill in the circle with the corresponding letter on the answer sheet.
2. Multiple option type:
Which of the following statements correctly describe(s) a poverty line/threshold?
I. It is the point at which governments act to implement social security programs.
II. It is a line developed by way of public policy, which can be used to measure relative degrees of wealth and poverty.
III. It is a line or standard developed by way of public policy decision making, which can be used to perform measurements of well-being relative to nonwell-being.A. I only
B. II only
C. III only
D. I and II only
E. II and III only
For this type of question, you must determine which roman numeral or combination of roman numerals best answers the question and then select the ONE OPTION that lists the correct roman numbers(s). In this example, you would select Option A, since only roman numeral I is correct, and fill in the circle with the corresponding letter on the answer sheet.
3. "All EXCEPT" type:
All the following statements regarding the Old Age Security (OAS) program are correct, EXCEPT:
A. It is a federally sponsored and administered program.
B. The pension normally begins in the month following a recipient's sixty-fifth birthday.
C. The OAS pension is subject to a residency test.
D. The OAS pension is subject to an income test.
E. The OAS pension is indexed annually to the cost of living, as measured by the Consumer Price Index.
For this type of question, the candidate must select the ONE OPTION that is the exception to the statement made (the incorrect option). In this example, you would select Option E and fill in the circle with the corresponding letter on the answer sheet.
All the questions of the same type are placed together in the examination. Questions of the straight answer type are placed first in the examination, followed by those of the multiple option type and finally by those of the "all EXCEPT" type.
