International Foundation Awards Excellence in Apprenticeship Training Awards
Brookfield, Wisconsin—The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans is pleased to announce the three recipients of the 2012 Excellence in Apprenticeship Training Award.
Overall Excellence in a Jointly Managed Training and Education Program
Don R. Davis, Executive Director, Electrical Training Institute, Los Angeles County Electrical JATC, Commerce, California
The Los Angeles County Electrical JATC was first established in 1947. Over 1,000 apprentices and over 5,000 journeyworkers have access to its training. To meet the challenges of an accelerated technology-dependent electrical construction industry, it focuses a significant amount of time and effort on providing the highest quality classroom instruction through instructor training and an industry-relevant curriculum.
Best Practices in Apprentice Retention
Mark Fuchs, Training Coordinator, St. Louis Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program, St. Louis, Missouri
The St. Louis Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program is guided by the work of seven standing joint labor-management advisory committees that annually review and update curriculum consistent with industry standards and best practices. There are over 700 apprentices in the program. It offers extensive skill upgrading training to journeyworkers in all core skill areas and is committed to the recruiting and training of minorities and women.
Best Practices in Instructor Training
Robert Swegle, Training Director, Mid-Central Illinois Regional Council of Carpenters (JATC), Pekin, Illinois
The Mid-Central Illinois Regional Council of Carpenters JATC covers 41 counties throughout central Illinois. It combines hands-on classroom education by qualified instructors with on-the-job training. There are over 350 apprentices active in the program. Curriculum is evaluated and updated every 90 days and presented to the board of trustees for approval.
The Excellence in Apprenticeship Training Award recognizes jointly managed training and apprenticeship programs and showcases the success and creativity of those dedicated to sustaining a premier workforce. Recipients of the award were honored at the Trustees Institute for Jointly Managed Training and Education Funds held January 23-25, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
