International Foundation Honors Nell Hennessy Posthumously With 2011 Public Service Award

Brookfield, Wisconsin—The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans will posthumously honor Nell Hennessy with this year’s Public Service Award at the Washington Legislative Update conference in Washington D.C. Hennessy, who passed away in February at the age of 61, was a champion for employee benefits for the past 30 years.

“Nell’s contributions to employee benefits and plan participants were many,” said Jack Simmons, International Foundation president and chair of the board. “Her commitment to the industry was truly awe-inspiring. It is with deep respect that the Foundation honors her with this award in recognition of her outstanding contributions and support of the advancement of employee benefit programs.”

Hennessy was president and chief executive officer of Fiduciary Counselors Inc. in Washington, D.C., a registered investment advisory firm that acts as independent fiduciary for employee benefit plans. From 1993 to 1998, she was deputy executive director and chief negotiator of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and headed PBGC’s multiemployer program. She also had served as president of Aon Fiduciary Counselors Inc. and was a partner at a law firm after beginning her career as an attorney with first the Internal Revenue Service and then PBGC.

Since 1981, Hennessy had been a frequent speaker or moderator at International Foundation education programs including the Annual Employee Benefits Conference, Washington Legislative Update and other Foundation programs. She also served on the Foundation’s Government/Industry Relations Committee for several years and since 2006 had served on the Investment Management Committee.

The annual Public Service Award is presented each year at the Washington Legislative Update in May and recognizes an individual’s contribution and concern for others through the advocacy and advancement of employee benefit plans.
