Trustee Training Path

Foundations of Trust Management Standards (FTMS®)

Friday, November 22-Saturday, November 23

Trustees play an important role in addressing the health and retirement needs of plan members. New trustees, in particular, must quickly gain an understanding of the basic principles of trust fund management as well as an awareness of knowing where to go to make informed decisions.

Foundations of Trust Management Standards (FTMS) is the first step in the trustee education path, focused on the needs of new Canadian multi-employer, public and corporate sector plan trustees. FTMS will help you understand the health and retirement needs of plan members while increasing your knowledge and awareness in the key areas of effective trust management: legal and regulatory issues, administration, governance and funding/investment and finance.

Advanced Trust Management Standards (ATMS™)

Friday, November 22-Saturday, November 23

Designed for the needs of experienced trustees, Advanced Trust Management Standards (ATMS) will give you the tools you need to not only be successful in your role as a trustee, but also let you look toward the future and prepare your plan for the challenges ahead.

For trustees who have either completed the FTMS program or passed the ATMS Qualifying Test, this is the perfect opportunity to continue your trustee training. Trustees will learn about more detailed applications and case studies on pension and health and welfare provided in ATMS.

  • Session A covers legal, administration and related governance issues.
  • Session B covers funding/investment/finance and related governance issues.

Master of Trust Management Standards (MTMS)

Friday, November 22-Saturday, November 23

For those who have completed both FTMS and ATMS, Master of Trust Management Standards (MTMS) is for leaders in their organization who are ready to look past the day-to-day operations of their funds and ready to leverage their own unique leadership strengths and skills to optimize their contributions.

You'll learn to engage and develop others—all with the aim of strengthening your plan or trust for the long-term benefit of your members.

  • Session A covers leadership, governance and oversight topics.
  • Session B covers leadership, strategic planning and risk management topics.

Certificate of Achievement—To earn the MTMS Certificate of Achievement, you must meet the following program element requirements for both Session A and Session B.

  • Prework including a passing score in an open-book, untimed, preprogram test (minimum 70% correct)
  • Full attendance at both Session A and Session B, which involves a total of four days of classroom instruction. The program is sequential—Session A is a prerequisite for Session B, which means attendance at two separate offerings/locations.
  • A "satisfactory" participation score in group activities from instructors
  • A passing score (minimum 70% correct) on the online posttests for Session A and Session B. The posttest for each session will be open-book, untimed and will include 30 multiple-choice questions on the prereadings/prework, on-site slides, exercises and materials and postreadings.

Prerequisites

Before enrolling in MTMS, you must:

  • Complete the FTMS Certificate of Achievement or pass the ATMS Qualifying Test
  • Complete the ATMS Certificate of Achievement (earned by completing the classroom work and passing the accompanying tests for Sessions A and B).

The MTMS Advanced Leadership Summit

MTMS graduates will have the opportunity to continue their learning and delve deeper into relevant topics critical to a fund's overall strategy. This year's topic is Under the Hood: The Inner Workings of Commercial Mortgages.
