Director of Operations – Benefits Administration Office

The National Automatic Sprinkler Industry (“NASI”) Welfare and Pension Funds (“Funds”), located in Landover, Maryland, are currently seeking an experienced Director of Operations to oversee all aspects of the Funds’ day-to-day operations, cross-departmental initiatives and overall benefits administration. This fully onsite position reports to the Executive Director and Assistant Executive Director, and requires strong communication, management and leadership skills.
The Fund Office administers eight (8) multiemployer plans consisting of defined benefit, defined contribution and health plans, as well as education and training funds covering more than 20,000 active and retired plan participants. The NASI workforce, or Sprinkler Fitters, install, repair, and maintain fire sprinkler systems in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings to protect lives and property. Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):
- Oversee day-to-day operations: Monitor operations and staff, ensuring efficient, accurate service and compliance with all relevant statutes and regulations including ERISA, DOL, HIPAA/HITECH, etc.
- Ensure financial and operational accuracy; establish and monitor operational policies, procedures and standards to ensure efficiency, accuracy and prompt, service to participants; prioritize workloads; maintain appropriate audit and control procedures for benefit payments to members, including calculation and verification of final benefits; handle escalated customer service issues.
- Supervision of staff: Lead and mentor department leaders and staff of 54 union and non-union employees; foster collaboration and high performance.
- Process Improvement: Drive strategic initiatives, participate in business planning and budgeting.
- Innovative and creative thinker with an ability to identify tasks that may be automated and implement necessary changes. Proficiency with office automation software and experience with benefits administration systems (experience with Basys Administration Software is a plus).
- Systems and technology: Ensure systems are maintained and updated to support the Funds’ recordkeeping, benefit processing, cybersecurity, and participant service needs.
- Financial Accounting: Work with the finance department to maintain general ledger and other financial records, for all of the Funds, and prepare cash flow reports and monthly financial statements; ensure completion of all transfers and other cash management duties; complete monthly bank reconciliations; monitor investments for compliance with Funds’ investment policies; coordinate employer payroll audits; work closely with the audit team and outside auditors in the preparation of year-end schedules, financial statements, and annual compliance reporting, including 5500, 990’s and Summary Annual Report, and completion of annual audits.
- Compliance: Work to ensure that operational procedures comply with plan rules and local, state, and federal laws and regulations; escalate compliance matters, as needed; remain familiar with plan provisions for all of the Funds and about new regulations, or other conditions affecting the Funds and their administration.
- Communication: Assist with communicating plan and policy changes and other information to staff, participants, contributing employers, unions, and other plan professionals and colleagues; coordinate the completion and distribution of participant communications and notices on-time.
- Meetings: Represent the Funds at NASI industry events and educational presentations.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:
- At least 7 years of prior experience in multiemployer benefits (both health and pension plans) and fund administration/operations.
- At least 5 years in senior management.
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate relevant work experience required. Advanced degree or certifications (e.g., CEBS) preferred.
- Direct experience in Taft-Hartley or collectively bargained benefit environments highly valued.
- Strong leadership, project management, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Deep knowledge of multiemployer fund operations, benefit plan regulations, and in-house health claims processing a plus.
- Understanding of benefits administration systems and current technologies.
- Excellent judgment, decision-making abilities and strong work ethic.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems.
- Team player, highly organized with the ability to motivate others to be organized.

The Funds offer a competitive salary range of $150,000 - $180,000 commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package that includes fully employer-paid health coverage, retirement benefits, and paid time off, among other benefits.
