Executive Director – Benefits Administration

UFCW Unions and Employers Benefits Administration, LLC, located in southwest Atlanta, is seeking an Executive Director to lead the administration and operations of its multiemployer benefit plans. The LLC provides administrative services to a $6 billion multiemployer defined benefit pension plan and three separate multiemployer health and welfare plans (collectively referred to as the “Funds”). The Funds provide benefits to approximately 220,000 active members and their eligible dependents as well as 180,000 retirees and beneficiaries.

Reporting to the Boards of Trustees, the Executive Director sets clear goals, applies sound judgment and critical thinking to complex operational and regulatory issues, and builds strong, collaborative relationships with staff, Trustees, unions, employers, and professional advisors in service of the Funds’ participants and beneficiaries. The Executive Director oversees the management of approximately 60 staff, with direct supervision of the executive team. This position requires a full-time in-office presence as well as some travel.

This role is accountable for overall performance of the LLC’s administration and service delivery to the Funds, ensuring work is accurate, timely, compliant, and continuously improving. The Executive Director leads through clear priorities, data-informed decision making, and proactive risk management, aligning people, processes, and vendors to the goals established by the Trustees.

The Executive Director serves as the Funds’ senior leader and a trusted partner to the Boards of Trustees—translating strategy into executable plans, facilitating productive decision making, and communicating with clarity and credibility. The role directly leads the executive team and fosters a respectful, high-performing culture across staff and stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the above, key goals and responsibilities include:

  • Own day-to-day operations and set standards, create business plans, and drive strategy for the LLC. Align resources, assess needs, and improve processes to meet the Funds’ goals.
  • Lead and develop the executive team and staff; build strong working relationships grounded in trust, accountability, and transparent communication.
  • Deliver accurate, timely and consistent plan administration and member service, supported by clear performance standards and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with the Boards of Trustees on strategy and drive planning and execution of goals across the LLC.
  • Direct financial stewardship for the LLC’s administrative budget ensuring strong controls, clear reporting, and transparency.
  • Provide governance support by coordinating the preparation of Board and committee agendas and materials, documenting decisions, and ensuring completion of deliverables.
  • Represent the Funds professionally with unions, employers, advisors, vendors, and government agencies as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate brings:

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in benefit plan administration (pension and health) and compliance; 10+ years in senior leadership, including executive-level decision making with Trustees or governing boards.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (e.g., MBA) and/or CEBS preferred. Taft-Hartley/collective bargaining experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff and build productive relationships with Trustees, staff, unions, employers, and external advisors—balancing differing perspectives with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret financial, operational, audit, and regulatory information and translate it into clear recommendations.
  • A strategic mindset with a curiosity and commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Proven ability to implement initiatives efficiently using appropriate resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with confidence presenting recommendations, options, tradeoffs, and outcomes to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
