Summary of certain functions performed by Benefits Coordinator
The Board of Trustees of the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Benefit Funds—including the Welfare Fund, 401(k) Savings Plan, and Trade Education Fund—is seeking a full-time Benefits Coordinator. Reporting to the Fund Administrator, this role is central to the effective functioning of the Funds, which serve approximately 2,600 active members, 1,000 retirees, and over 120 contributing employers, with assets exceeding $1 billion.

The Benefits Coordinator will oversee and direct the administration of the Welfare and Retirement Funds, while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This position also plays a critical leadership role in supervising, developing, and directing Fund Office staff to deliver accurate, timely, and professional service to participants.

  • Provide strategic oversight and administration of employee benefit programs, including medical plans, HRA, COBRA, and retirement (401(k)) plans.
  • Oversee benefit appeals procedures and prepare materials for the Board of Trustees’ Appeals Committee.
  • Monitor and assist in providing direction to the Welfare Department.
  • Lead and oversee benefit Welfare Department operations such as open enrollments, communications, audits, SPDs, reporting, and disclosures.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, ERISA, ACA reporting requirements, and other state and federal regulations.
  • Oversee member services to ensure Fund Office staff respond accurately, promptly, and professionally to participant inquiries, escalating to the Member Liaison when necessary.
  • Prepare reports and updates for the Fund Administrator and Board of Trustees upon request.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong leadership skills with experience directing staff in a unionized or Taft-Hartley plan environment.
  • Ability to interpret benefit plan documents and apply operational knowledge to recommend process improvements.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities; skilled at prioritizing in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access) with the ability to analyze reports from multiple data sources.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on service excellence and participant satisfaction.
  • Analytical problem-solver with sound judgment in complex or ambiguous situations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree or CEBS certification preferred).
  • 5–7 years of experience in employee benefit plan operations or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of senior-level management or supervisory experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical claims and 401(k) administration.
  • Experience with Taft-Hartley benefit plans is strongly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits
The position offers a salary range of between $90,000 - $105,000 per year based on experience and qualifications, paid time off, and a superior benefits package including Medical, Rx, Vision, and Life Insurance; short- and long-term disability coverage; and retirement benefits.
