Cancer/oncology care costs continue to rise. The Cancer/Oncology Care Strategies: 2025 Pulse Survey from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans reveals increased U.S. employer spending on cancer/oncology care as well as popular steerage techniques used to contain costs. Steerage techniques are strategies used by insurers and employers to influence plan members toward using certain health care providers, facilities or pharmacies to control costs and improve outcomes.
Highlights from the infographic:
- Responding corporate and single employers reported an increase in cancer care spending in the last year (86%) while only 14% stating their costs have not increased.
- The top three steerage techniques used to reduce costs included utilizing nurse navigators (63%), requiring second opinions(58%) and working with centers of excellence (42%).
- The most common fee models used by employers were shared-savings or risk-sharing, bundled-rate, pathways and per-procedure or service.
